CHAPTER 04 · Practical Guidance: When and How to Use Agentic RAG · 8 / 9

How these lessons connect to the other topics

It is worth noticing that this chapter is, in effect, a restatement of themes you have already met:

  • "Not always the right default" and "explicit constraints" are the minimal-effective-system idea from context engineering.
  • "Retrieval is the bottleneck" matches the memory topic's finding that retrieval quality gates everything.
  • "Process, not just outcomes" is the MAST diagnostic philosophy from multi-agent.
  • "Deploy responsibly" is the governance and production-reliability theme from both multi-agent and memory.

That convergence is the real lesson of reading all four topics together: whether you are doing context engineering, building multi-agent systems, designing memory, or building agentic RAG, the same small set of disciplines decides whether the system works: keep it as simple as the task allows, get the fundamentals (retrieval, context) right first, constrain autonomy, evaluate the process, and govern for safety.
