CHAPTER 05 · Governing Evolving Memory (the SSGM Framework) · 6 / 7
Why this chapter matters even if you never build SSGM
You may never implement this exact framework. The value of the paper for a practitioner is the way of thinking it gives you. It says: if your agent's memory can change itself, you need a deliberate governance layer, not just a store and a retriever. Concretely, that means a check before writing (does this contradict known facts?), a filter before reading (is this fresh, trusted, and allowed?), and a periodic reconciliation against raw records (has anything drifted?). Those three habits, even implemented simply, are what separate a memory system that improves over time from one that quietly corrupts itself.
