CHAPTER 01 · Why Memory Matters, and the Write-Manage-Read Loop · 4 / 5
Where this is heading
The rest of the chapters follow the structure this loop implies:
- Chapter 2 covers the kinds of memory you might write and read (working, episodic, semantic, procedural), which is really about organizing the write and read phases by purpose and lifespan.
- Chapter 3 covers the mechanisms that implement write, manage, and read: how memories are created, consolidated, and retrieved.
- Chapter 4 covers the failure modes, which are overwhelmingly failures of the manage phase (drift, staleness, contradiction).
- Chapter 5 covers governance, which is essentially a disciplined, safety-aware version of the manage phase for systems where memory can rewrite itself.
